In the end, even though I wasn't able to pull off the event, still having a set concept was more than enough. what I had for the expo still gave me a chance to complete my goal of getting more students of color to join extracurricular activities and making sure students have a space they feel they belong. This project in itself has been through a lot of change. From the name change of Known Groups SHowcase to Multicultral workshops, and just the concept of the project tacking a deeper problem that goes unticed in most cases. It's still int he process of being completed, but i believe that a lot been completed in that short time and that more is yet to come.
For this project, I had a few challenges that made the planning process more difficult. The first challenge was reaching out. This was hard because there were so many people to reach out to and sometimes the people didn't always respond when you would've liked them to or things need up falling through. This project changed a lot. Now I originally had planned to have a week full of a lunchtime showcase, but once I got the grant I wanted to plan for 100-120 people which was a bit too big planning a school-wide event for the first time. So I decided to shrink it down and reach out to the Avid program within our school, but by the time did that it was too late for the teachers. Lastly, I became a challenge as well. Looking back now, at some moments I was too afraid to ask for help or venture into something by myself, and this was because I didn't want to feel as if I was a burden to others.
This whole process was a reward in itself. I say this because how often are you going to get a chance to work towards making a change or coming up with a solution that can benefit someone else's life? As a senior, I couldn't have been more grateful to have had this class in my last trimester. This is because this class and making this project has taught me so much about myself and has given me a different view on life going into adulthood.
looking into the future I know I will continue to work with Mr.Farley, our principal, to make sure this event comes to life in the following school year. I hope to find a student I can pass this project down to afterward so that they can continue the legacy of this event. I also want to take this time to reflect on all four of my years during my time in the STEAM program. This program has taught me so many things but the two main things I will take on with me are creativity and perseverance. We live in a world where everyone wants to be everybody but themselves, they want to be the trend follower instead of expressing their creativity and being the trendsetter. In my eyes that's sad. This is also why creativity is so important to me, it's a form of expression and tells who you are and I could imagine living life without this ability. Lastly, perseverance which is the ability to keep going in the face of adversity. While going through this program, I faced a lot of things in life. My family hit a very rocky patch, Covid hit and changed schooling forever, I also had a lot on my plate at school while trying to juggle my grades. All in all the fact that I know I persevered through all these things just lets me know no matter what comes my way, by the grace of God I will persevere.
